Launch of the Disability Law Project at Ipswich

Friday 10th Jul 2009

TASC's Disability Law Project (DLP), which commenced in Toowoomba, 2005, has been expanded to cover the Ipswich area.

The Honourable Annastacia Palaszczuk, Minister launched the DLP in Ipswich on 1 July 2009 at the Magistrates Court for Multicultural Affairs and Disability Services.

The launch was attended by Magistrates from the Ipswich Court, representatives from the Department of Justice and Attorney General, Disablility Services, Queensland Legal Aid, Queensland Police Services, and representatives of community organisations who work closely with persons with a disability.

The CEO of TASC, Dan Toombs, addressed the need for the DLP in his speech.

The Project provides assistance, both from a legal and advocacy perspective for persons who suffer from Mental Health Issues, an Intellectual Disability or an Acquired Brain Injury.

The purpose of the DLP is to ensure that persons who do not have the capacity to understand the nature of their acts, to control their actions or understand a trial process have access to legal representation in the criminal justice system.

The DLP works closely with Disabiilty Advocates to ensure a holistic approach to client needs.

The DLP has been successful in Toowoomba with a 90% reduction in the recidivism rate for clients.
